Consider the following statements : 1. The minimum age prescribed for any person to be a member of Panchayat is 25 years. 2. A Panchayat reconstituted after premature dissolution continues only for the remainder period. Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
- (a) 1 only
- (b) 2 only ✓ UPSC's answer
- (c) Both 1 and 2
- (d) Neither 1 nor 2
Why the answer is (b)
• Article 243F allows any person qualified to be a member of a State Legislature to be a Panchayat member, except that the minimum age is 21 years, not 25 — so statement 1 is wrong.
• Statement 2 is correct: under Article 243E, a Panchayat constituted after premature dissolution continues only for the remainder of the period the dissolved Panchayat would have served (unless less than six months remained).
• Hence 2 only, option (b).
Why the other options are wrong
- (a) 1 only
- Statement 1 is wrong: the minimum age is 21.
- (c) Both 1 and 2
- Statement 1 is wrong.
- (d) Neither 1 nor 2
- Statement 2 is correct under Article 243E.
