UPSC Prelims 2016 GS Paper I · Q85 of 100 Geography medium

Recently, linking of which of the following rivers was undertaken?

  1. (a) Cauvery and Tungabhadra
  2. (b) Godavari and Krishna ✓ UPSC's answer
  3. (c) Mahanadi and Sone
  4. (d) Narmada and Tapti

Why the answer is (b)

• In September 2015 Andhra Pradesh completed the Pattiseema lift scheme, diverting Godavari water through the Polavaram right canal into the Krishna river above the Prakasam barrage — India's first major river-linking project — option (b).

• It helps the Krishna delta and frees Krishna water for Rayalaseema.

• Cauvery–Tungabhadra (a), Mahanadi–Sone (c) and Narmada–Tapti (d) links remain proposals.

• Hence option (b).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) Cauvery and Tungabhadra
Cauvery–Tungabhadra linking has not been undertaken.
(c) Mahanadi and Sone
Mahanadi–Sone is a proposal only.
(d) Narmada and Tapti
Narmada–Tapti linking has not been undertaken.
