Consider the following pairs : Famous place : Region 1. Bodhgaya : Baghelkhand 2. Khajuraho : Bundelkhand 3. Shirdi : Vidarbha 4. Nasik (Nashik) : Malwa 5. Tirupati : Rayalaseema Which of the pairs given above are correctly matched?

  1. (a) 1, 2 and 4
  2. (b) 2, 3, 4 and 5
  3. (c) 2 and 5 only ✓ UPSC's answer
  4. (d) 1, 3, 4 and 5

Why the answer is (c)

• Khajuraho lies in Chhatarpur district in the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh (pair 2); Tirupati is in Chittoor district in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh (pair 5).

• Bodhgaya (1) is in Magadha (Bihar), not Baghelkhand; Shirdi (3) is in Ahmednagar district in western Maharashtra, not Vidarbha; Nashik (4) is in the Deccan/Khandesh region of Maharashtra, not Malwa.

• Hence 2 and 5 only, option (c).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) 1, 2 and 4
Bodhgaya is in Magadha and Nashik is not in Malwa.
(b) 2, 3, 4 and 5
Shirdi is not in Vidarbha and Nashik is not in Malwa.
(d) 1, 3, 4 and 5
Pairs 1, 3 and 4 are all wrong.
