Consider the following Table : Player | Runs scored in the First Innings | Balls faced in the First Innings | Runs scored in the Second Innings | Balls faced in the Second Innings A | 61 | 99 | 14 | 76 B | 05 | 12 | 50 | 85 C | 15 | 75 | 20 | 50 D | 13 | 55 | 12 | 50 Who is the fastest run scorer in the Test Match ?

  1. (a) A
  2. (b) B ✓ UPSC's answer
  3. (c) C
  4. (d) D

Why the answer is (b)

• Fastest run scorer means highest strike rate: total runs divided by total balls faced, multiplied by 100.

• A: (61+14)/(99+76) = 75/175 = 42.86.

• B: (5+50)/(12+85) = 55/97 = 56.70.

• C: (15+20)/(75+50) = 35/125 = 28.00.

• D: (13+12)/(55+50) = 25/105 = 23.81.

• B has the highest strike rate, so option (b) is correct.

Why the other options are wrong

(a) A
A's strike rate is 42.86, lower than B's 56.70.
(c) C
C's strike rate is 28.00, lower than B's 56.70.
(d) D
D's strike rate is 23.81, lower than B's 56.70.
