A Question is given followed by two Statements I and II. Consider the Question and the Statements. Question : Is (x + y) an integer? Statement-I : (2x + y) is an integer. Statement-II : (x + 2y) is an integer. Which one of the following is correct in respect of the above Question and the Statements?
- (a) The Question can be answered by using one of the Statements alone, but cannot be answered using the other Statement alone
- (b) The Question can be answered by using either Statement alone
- (c) The Question can be answered by using both the Statements together, but cannot be answered using either Statement alone

Why the answer is (d)
• Let Statement I be $2x + y = m$ and Statement II be $x + 2y = n$, where $m$ and $n$ are integers.
• Adding the two equations gives $3x + 3y = m + n$, which simplifies to $x + y = \frac{m + n}{3}$.
• For $x + y$ to be an integer, the sum $m + n$ must be divisible by 3.
• Since $m$ and $n$ are arbitrary integers, their sum is not necessarily divisible by 3 (e.g., if $m=1, n=1$, then $x+y=2/3$).
• Therefore, the value of $x + y$ cannot be determined to be an integer with certainty, making the question unanswerable even with both statements.
