Recently, a series of uprisings of people referred to as 'Arab Spring' originally started from

  1. (a) Egypt
  2. (b) Lebanon
  3. (c) Syria
  4. (d) Tunisia ✓ UPSC's answer

Why the answer is (d)

• The Arab Spring began in Tunisia in December 2010 after street vendor Mohamed Bouazizi's self-immolation sparked protests that toppled President Ben Ali in January 2011 (the 'Jasmine Revolution') — option (d).

• It then spread to Egypt (Mubarak's fall), Libya, Yemen, Syria and Bahrain.

• Hence option (d).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) Egypt
Egypt's uprising followed Tunisia's.
(b) Lebanon
Lebanon was not the origin.
(c) Syria
Syria's uprising came later in 2011.
