Recently, a series of uprisings of people referred to as 'Arab Spring' originally started from
- (a) Egypt
- (b) Lebanon
- (c) Syria
- (d) Tunisia ✓ UPSC's answer
Why the answer is (d)
• The Arab Spring began in Tunisia in December 2010 after street vendor Mohamed Bouazizi's self-immolation sparked protests that toppled President Ben Ali in January 2011 (the 'Jasmine Revolution') — option (d).
• It then spread to Egypt (Mubarak's fall), Libya, Yemen, Syria and Bahrain.
• Hence option (d).
Why the other options are wrong
- (a) Egypt
- Egypt's uprising followed Tunisia's.
- (b) Lebanon
- Lebanon was not the origin.
- (c) Syria
- Syria's uprising came later in 2011.
