UPSC Prelims 2014 GS Paper I · Q45 of 100 Geography medium

Consider the following rivers : 1. Barak 2. Lohit 3. Subansiri Which of the above flows/flow through Arunachal Pradesh?

  1. (a) 1 only
  2. (b) 2 and 3 only ✓ UPSC's answer
  3. (c) 1 and 3 only
  4. (d) 1, 2 and 3

Why the answer is (b)

• The Lohit (2) enters Arunachal from Tibet and joins the Brahmaputra near Sadiya; the Subansiri (3), the Brahmaputra's largest tributary, flows through Arunachal's Upper Subansiri district.

• The Barak (1) rises in Manipur and flows through Assam's Cachar valley into Bangladesh; it does not touch Arunachal.

• Hence 2 and 3 only, option (b).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) 1 only
Barak does not flow through Arunachal.
(c) 1 and 3 only
Barak does not; Lohit does.
(d) 1, 2 and 3
Barak does not flow through Arunachal.
