UPSC Prelims 2015 GS Paper I · Q29 of 100 Economy easy

Which of the following brings out the 'Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers'?

  1. (a) The Reserve Bank of India
  2. (b) The Department of Economic Affairs
  3. (c) The Labour Bureau ✓ UPSC's answer
  4. (d) The Department of Personnel and Training

Why the answer is (c)

• The Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) is compiled and released monthly by the Labour Bureau, Shimla, under the Ministry of Labour and Employment — option (c).

• It is used to fix dearness allowance for government employees and industrial workers; its base year was revised to 2016.

• The RBI (a) targets CPI-Combined compiled by NSO; DEA (b) and DoPT (d) do not compile price indices.

• Hence option (c).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) The Reserve Bank of India
The RBI uses but does not compile CPI-IW.
(b) The Department of Economic Affairs
DEA does not compile price indices.
(d) The Department of Personnel and Training
DoPT does not compile price indices.
