Which one of the following pairs of States of India indicates the easternmost and westernmost State?

  1. (a) Assam and Rajasthan
  2. (b) Arunachal Pradesh and Rajasthan
  3. (c) Assam and Gujarat

Why the answer is (d)

• India's easternmost point is Kibithu in Anjaw district, Arunachal Pradesh (about 97.4° E); its westernmost point is Guhar Moti in Kachchh, Gujarat (about 68.1° E).

• Arunachal Pradesh and Gujarat are therefore the easternmost and westernmost States — option (d).

• Assam lies west of Arunachal; Rajasthan's western edge (Sir Creek is in Gujarat) is east of Gujarat's.

• Hence option (d).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) Assam and Rajasthan
Assam is not the easternmost; Rajasthan is not the westernmost.
(b) Arunachal Pradesh and Rajasthan
Rajasthan is not the westernmost State.
(c) Assam and Gujarat
Assam is not the easternmost State.
