UPSC Prelims 2015 GS Paper I · Q72 of 100 Geography medium

Consider the following States : 1. Arunachal Pradesh 2. Himachal Pradesh 3. Mizoram In which of the above States do 'Tropical Wet Evergreen Forests' occur?

  1. (a) 1 only
  2. (b) 2 and 3 only
  3. (c) 1 and 3 only ✓ UPSC's answer
  4. (d) 1, 2 and 3

Why the answer is (c)

• Tropical wet evergreen forests need over 200 cm of rain and warm temperatures year-round; in India they occur in the Western Ghats, the Andamans and the north-eastern States — Arunachal Pradesh (1) and Mizoram (3) among them.

• Himachal Pradesh (2), in the temperate western Himalaya, has coniferous and broad-leaved temperate forests, not tropical evergreen.

• Hence 1 and 3 only, option (c).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) 1 only
Mizoram also has tropical wet evergreen forests.
(b) 2 and 3 only
Himachal has temperate, not tropical evergreen, forests.
(d) 1, 2 and 3
Himachal has no tropical wet evergreen forest.
