The monthly average salary paid to all the employees of a company was Rs. 5000. The monthly average salary paid to male and female employees was Rs. 5200 and Rs. 4200 respectively. Then the percentage of males employed in the company is :

Why the answer is (b)
• Let there be M men and F women.
• Total salary: 5000(M + F) = 5200M + 4200F.
• So 800F = 200M, i.e. M = 4F.
• Share of men = 4F ÷ 5F = 4/5 = 80%.
• Hence 80%, option (b).
Why the other options are wrong
- (a) 75%
- 75% men gives an average of 0.75 × 5200 + 0.25 × 4200 = Rs. 4,950, not 5,000.
- (c) 85%
- 85% men gives an average of Rs. 5,050, not 5,000.
- (d) 90%
- 90% men gives an average of Rs. 5,100, not 5,000.
