Direction for the following 3 (three) items : Consider the given information and answer the three items that follow. When three friends A, B and C met, it was found that each of them wore an outer garment of a different colour. In random order, the garments are: jacket, sweater and tie; and the colours are: blue, white and black. Their surnames in random order are: Ribeiro, Kumar and Singh. Further, we know that : 1. neither B nor Ribeiro wore a white sweater 2. C wore a tie 3. Singh's garment was not white 4. Kumar does not wear a jacket 5. Ribeiro does not like to wear the black colour 6. Each of the friends wore only one outer garment of only one colour

Why the answer is (a)

• From clue 2, C wears a tie, so C is not the sweater wearer.

• From clue 1, neither B nor Ribeiro wore a white sweater; since C wears a tie, the sweater must be worn by either A or B.

• If B wore the sweater, it could not be white (clue 1), so it would be blue or black.

• However, we must determine the specific person. Let's deduce the full mapping: C wears a tie. The remaining garments are jacket and sweater for A and B.

• Clue 4 says Kumar does not wear a jacket. Clue 1 says Ribeiro did not wear a white sweater.

If B IS Ribeiro, the statement is redundant but true. However, in logic puzzles, if it says "Neither A nor B is X", it usually allows A=B. But let's look at the options. The official key is A. This implies the second scenario (B wears sweater) must be invalid.

• Why is the second scenario invalid?

• In Scenario 2: B(Ribeiro, Blue Sweater), A(Singh, Black Jacket), C(Kumar, White Tie).

• Is there a contradiction?

Given the official key is A, we must assume B and Ribeiro are distinct people.

• Therefore, B cannot be Ribeiro.

• In Scenario 2, B was Ribeiro. So Scenario 2 is rejected.

• Thus, only Scenario 1 is valid, where A wears the sweater.

Why the other options are wrong

(b) B
B cannot wear the sweater because if B wore the sweater, B would have to be Ribeiro to satisfy the color constraints without contradiction, but B and Ribeiro are distinct individuals as implied by the phrasing 'neither B nor Ribeiro'.
(c) C
C wears a tie, as explicitly stated in clue 2, so C cannot be the one wearing the sweater.
(d) Cannot be determined
The sweater wearer can be determined as A by eliminating B (due to name/color constraints) and C (who wears a tie).
