UPSC Prelims 2018 GS Paper I · Q17 of 100 General Science medium

The identity platform ‘Aadhaar’ provides open “Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)”. What does it imply ? 1. It can be integrated into any electronic device. 2. Online authentication using iris is possible. Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?

  1. (a) 1 only
  2. (b) 2 only
  3. (c) Both 1 and 2 ✓ UPSC's answer
  4. (d) Neither 1 nor 2

Why the answer is (c)

• Open APIs let any developer or device connect to Aadhaar's authentication and e-KYC services through standard interfaces.

• Statement 1 is correct: this is why Aadhaar authentication can be built into smartphones, PoS machines, micro-ATMs and other electronic devices.

• Statement 2 is correct: the APIs support online authentication by fingerprint, iris and OTP; iris is used, for example, in PDS and pension verification where fingerprints are worn.

• Hence both 1 and 2, option (c).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) 1 only
Statement 2 is also correct: iris authentication is supported.
(b) 2 only
Statement 1 is also correct: APIs allow device integration.
(d) Neither 1 nor 2
Both statements are correct.
