UPSC Prelims 2018 GS Paper I · Q83 of 100 Environment & Ecology medium

The Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE), a UN mechanism to assist countries transition towards greener and more inclusive economies, emerged at

  1. (a) The Earth Summit on Sustainable Development 2002, Johannesburg
  2. (b) The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development 2012, Rio de Janeiro ✓ UPSC's answer
  3. (c) The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 2015, Paris
  4. (d) The World Sustainable Development Summit 2016, New Delhi

Why the answer is (b)

• PAGE was launched in 2013 in response to the outcome document 'The Future We Want' of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) held at Rio de Janeiro in 2012, which called for support to countries pursuing green economies — option (b).

• It brings together UNEP, ILO, UNDP, UNIDO and UNITAR; India is not a PAGE country.

• Johannesburg 2002 (a), Paris 2015 (c) and New Delhi's WSDS (d) are unrelated to its origin.

• Hence option (b).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) The Earth Summit on Sustainable Development 2002, Johannesburg
PAGE did not emerge from Johannesburg 2002.
(c) The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 2015, Paris
PAGE predates Paris 2015.
(d) The World Sustainable Development Summit 2016, New Delhi
WSDS is a TERI event, unrelated to PAGE.
