  2. (b) 3 and 4 only
  3. (c) 1 and 3 only ✓ UPSC's answer
  4. (d) 2 and 4 only

Why the answer is (c)

• Pair 1 is correct: Catalonia, with Barcelona as capital, held a disputed independence referendum from Spain in 2017.

• Pair 3 is correct: Mindanao is the southern island group of the Philippines, site of the Marawi siege (2017) and the Bangsamoro autonomy process.

• Pair 2 is wrong: Crimea was annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014; it has no link to Hungary.

• Pair 4 is wrong: Oromia is the largest region of Ethiopia, home of the Oromo, not Nigeria.

• Hence 1 and 3 only, option (c).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) 1, 2 and 3
Pair 2 is wrong: Crimea concerns Ukraine/Russia.
(b) 3 and 4 only
Pair 4 is wrong: Oromia is in Ethiopia.
