Why the answer is (a)

• Pair 1 is correct: Pandharpur, the Vitthal pilgrimage town in Maharashtra, stands on the Bhima, locally called Chandrabhaga for its crescent bend.

• Pair 2 is correct: Tiruchirappalli lies on the Cauvery, with Srirangam on the island between the Cauvery and Kollidam.

• Pair 3 is wrong: Hampi, the Vijayanagara capital, is on the Tungabhadra; the Malaprabha flows past Aihole and Pattadakal.

• Hence 1 and 2 only, option (a).
