Consider the following pairs : Glacier : River 1. Bandarpunch : Yamuna 2. Bara Shigri : Chenab 3. Milam : Mandakini 4. Siachen : Nubra 5. Zemu : Manas Which of the pairs given above are correctly matched?

  1. (a) 1, 2 and 4 ✓ UPSC's answer
  2. (b) 1, 3 and 4
  3. (c) 2 and 5
  4. (d) 3 and 5

Why the answer is (a)

• Pair 1 is correct: the Yamuna rises from the Yamunotri glacier on the Bandarpunch massif.

• Pair 2 is correct: Bara Shigri in Lahaul (Himachal) feeds the Chandra river, a headstream of the Chenab.

• Pair 4 is correct: the Nubra river rises from the Siachen glacier.

• Pair 3 is wrong: Milam glacier (Kumaon) feeds the Goriganga, not the Mandakini, which rises from Chorabari glacier.

• Pair 5 is wrong: Zemu glacier (Sikkim) feeds the Teesta, not the Manas (which rises in Bhutan).

• Hence 1, 2 and 4, option (a).

Why the other options are wrong

(b) 1, 3 and 4
Pair 3 is wrong: Milam feeds the Goriganga.
(c) 2 and 5
Pair 5 is wrong: Zemu feeds the Teesta.
(d) 3 and 5
Pairs 3 and 5 are both wrong.
