UPSC Prelims 2021 GS Paper I · Q98 of 98 Current Events medium

Consider the following statements in respect of the Laureus World Sports Award which was instituted in the year 2000 : 1. American golfer Tiger Woods was the first winner of this award. 2. The award was received mostly by 'Formula One' players so far. 3. Roger Federer received this award maximum number of times compared to others. Which of the above statements are correct?

  1. (a) 1 and 2 only
  2. (b) 2 and 3 only
  3. (c) 1 and 3 only ✓ UPSC's answer
  4. (d) 1, 2 and 3

Why the answer is (c)

• The Laureus World Sports Awards, instituted in 2000, honour the year's best sportsman, sportswoman, team and others.

• Statement 1 is correct: Tiger Woods won the inaugural Sportsman of the Year award in 2000.

• Statement 3 is correct: Roger Federer holds the record with six Laureus awards (five Sportsman of the Year plus Comeback of the Year 2018).

• Statement 2 is wrong: winners span tennis, athletics, football, cycling and golf; Formula One drivers (Schumacher, Vettel, Hamilton) have won only a few times.

• Sachin Tendulkar received the Laureus Sporting Moment 2000–2020 award in 2020.

• Hence 1 and 3 only, option (c).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) 1 and 2 only
Statement 2 is wrong: F1 drivers have not dominated the award.
(b) 2 and 3 only
Statement 2 is wrong; statement 1 is correct.
(d) 1, 2 and 3
Statement 2 is wrong, so all three cannot be correct.
