Eight students A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H sit around a circular table, equidistant from each other, facing the centre of the table, not necessarily in the same order. B and D sit neither adjacent to C nor opposite to C. A sits in between E and D, and F sits in between B and H. Which one of the following is definitely correct?
- (a) B sits in between A and G
- (b) C sits opposite to G
- (c) E sits opposite to F
- (d) None of the above ✓ UPSC's answer
Why the answer is (d)
• Let the positions be 1 to 8 clockwise. Since A sits between E and D, the sequence is E-A-D or D-A-E.
• Since F sits between B and H, the sequence is B-F-H or H-F-B.
• B and D are neither adjacent to nor opposite C. This implies C is at a distance of 2 or 3 from B and D.
• Testing valid arrangements: If we place A at 1, E at 2, D at 8 (E-A-D), then B and H must be separated by F.
• One valid arrangement is: 1:A, 2:E, 3:B, 4:F, 5:H, 6:C, 7:G, 8:D. Here, B(3) is not adjacent/opposite C(6) (dist 3), D(8) is not adjacent/opposite C(6) (dist 2). In this case, B is between E and F, not A and G. C is opposite H, not G. E is opposite H, not F.
• Another valid arrangement is: 1:A, 2:D, 3:G, 4:C, 5:H, 6:F, 7:B, 8:E. Here, B(7) is not adjacent/opposite C(4) (dist 3), D(2) is not adjacent/opposite C(4) (dist 2). In this case, B is between F and E, not A and G. C is opposite F, not G. E is opposite H, not F.
• Since multiple valid arrangements exist where none of the specific relationships in (a), (b), or (c) hold true, no single option is definitely correct.
Why the other options are wrong
- (a) B sits in between A and G
- In valid arrangements, B is not necessarily situated between A and G; for instance, B can be adjacent to E and F.
- (b) C sits opposite to G
- C is not always opposite G; in some valid configurations, C is opposite F or H.
- (c) E sits opposite to F
- E is not always opposite F; in some valid configurations, E is opposite H or G.
