UPSC Prelims 2024 GS Paper I · Q21 of 96 Geography medium

Consider the following airports : 1. Donyi Polo Airport 2. Kushinagar International Airport 3. Vijayawada International Airport In the recent past, which of the above have been constructed as Greenfield projects ?

  1. (a) 1 and 2 only ✓ UPSC's answer
  2. (b) 2 and 3 only
  3. (c) 1 and 3 only
  4. (d) 1, 2 and 3

Why the answer is (a)

• A greenfield airport is built from scratch on a new site; a brownfield project expands or modernises an existing airport.

• Donyi Polo Airport at Hollongi near Itanagar, opened in November 2022, is Arunachal Pradesh's first greenfield airport — item 1 qualifies.

• Kushinagar International Airport in Uttar Pradesh, inaugurated in 2021 to serve the Buddhist circuit, was developed as a greenfield project under the Greenfield Airports Policy — item 2 qualifies.

• Vijayawada International Airport at Gannavaram is an old airfield upgraded to international status — a brownfield expansion, so item 3 does not qualify.

• Hence 1 and 2 only, option (a).

Why the other options are wrong

(b) 2 and 3 only
Vijayawada is a brownfield expansion, not a greenfield project.
(c) 1 and 3 only
Vijayawada is brownfield; Kushinagar is greenfield.
(d) 1, 2 and 3
Vijayawada airport was upgraded, not newly built.
