UPSC Prelims 2024 GS Paper I · Q23 of 96 Geography medium

Consider the following description : 1. Annual and daily range of temperatures is low. 2. Precipitation occurs throughout the year. 3. Precipitation varies between 50 cm – 250 cm. What is this type of climate ?

  1. (a) Equatorial climate
  2. (b) China type climate
  3. (c) Humid subtropical climate
  4. (d) Marine West coast climate ✓ UPSC's answer

Why the answer is (d)

• The Marine West Coast (British type) climate lies on the western margins of continents between 40° and 60° latitude, under the influence of onshore westerlies and warm ocean currents.

• Its marks are exactly those listed: mild temperatures with a low annual and daily range because of the moderating sea, rain in all seasons, and totals that vary widely (about 50–250 cm) depending on exposure to the westerlies and relief — option (d).

• The equatorial climate has a low range but very heavy, convectional rain above 200 cm; the China-type and humid subtropical climates lie on eastern margins with hotter summers and a larger temperature range.

• Western Europe, British Columbia, southern Chile, Tasmania and New Zealand are examples.

• Hence option (d).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) Equatorial climate
Equatorial rainfall exceeds 200 cm and is convectional, not 50-250 cm.
(b) China type climate
China-type climate has hot summers and a larger temperature range.
(c) Humid subtropical climate
Humid subtropical climates lie on eastern margins with a greater temperature range.
