UPSC Prelims 2024 GS Paper I · Q60 of 96 Economy medium

With reference to the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan (PM-SYM) Yojana, consider the following statements : 1. The entry age group for enrolment in the scheme is 21 to 40 years. 2. Age specific contribution shall be made by the beneficiary. 3. Each subscriber under the scheme shall receive a minimum pension of ₹ 3,000 per month after attaining the age of 60 years. 4. Family pension is applicable to the spouse and unmarried daughters. Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?

  1. (a) 1, 3 and 4
  2. (b) 2 and 3 only ✓ UPSC's answer
  3. (c) 2 only
  4. (d) 1, 2 and 4

Why the answer is (b)

• PM-SYM (2019) is a voluntary, contributory pension scheme for unorganised workers earning up to ₹15,000 a month, run by the Ministry of Labour and Employment with LIC as fund manager.

• Statement 1 is wrong: the entry age is 18 to 40 years, not 21 to 40.

• Statement 2 is correct: the subscriber pays an age-specific monthly contribution (₹55 at age 18 rising to ₹200 at 40), matched equally by the Central Government.

• Statement 3 is correct: each subscriber receives an assured minimum pension of ₹3,000 per month after the age of 60.

• Statement 4 is wrong: family pension of 50% is payable only to the spouse, not to unmarried daughters. Hence 2 and 3 only, option (b).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) 1, 3 and 4
Statements 1 (entry age 18) and 4 (spouse only) are wrong.
(c) 2 only
Statement 3 on the 3,000 rupee pension is also correct.
(d) 1, 2 and 4
Statements 1 and 4 are wrong.
