UPSC Prelims 2014 GS Paper I · Q52 of 100 Geography easy

What is the correct sequence of occurrence of the following cities in South-East Asia as one proceeds from south to north? 1. Bangkok 2. Hanoi 3. Jakarta 4. Singapore Select the correct answer using the code given below.

  1. (a) 4-2-1-3
  2. (b) 3-2-4-1
  3. (c) 3-4-1-2 ✓ UPSC's answer
  4. (d) 4-3-2-1

Why the answer is (c)

• Jakarta lies at about 6° S, Singapore at 1° N, Bangkok at 13.7° N and Hanoi at 21° N.

• From south to north the order is Jakarta (3) – Singapore (4) – Bangkok (1) – Hanoi (2).

• Hence 3-4-1-2, option (c).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) 4-2-1-3
Jakarta, not Singapore, is southernmost; Hanoi is northernmost.
(b) 3-2-4-1
Singapore is south of Bangkok and Hanoi.
(d) 4-3-2-1
Hanoi is north of Bangkok; the order is reversed.
