UPSC Prelims 2017 CSAT Paper II · Q72 of 79 Logical Reasoning easy

In a school, there are five teachers A, B, C, D and E. A and B teach Hindi and English. C and B teach English and Geography. D and A teach Mathematics and Hindi. E and B teach History and French. Who teaches maximum number of subjects?

  1. (a) A
  2. (b) B ✓ UPSC's answer
  3. (c) D
  4. (d) E

Why the answer is (b)

• A and B teach Hindi and English, so A teaches Hindi and English, and B teaches Hindi and English.

• C and B teach English and Geography, so B adds Geography, and C teaches English and Geography.

• D and A teach Mathematics and Hindi, so A adds Mathematics, and D teaches Mathematics and Hindi.

• E and B teach History and French, so B adds History and French, and E teaches History and French.

• The subject counts are A = 3, B = 5, C = 2, D = 2, E = 2, so B teaches the maximum number of subjects, hence option (b).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) A
A teaches only Hindi, English and Mathematics, i.e. 3 subjects, not the maximum.
(c) D
D teaches only Mathematics and Hindi, i.e. 2 subjects, not the maximum.
(d) E
E teaches only History and French, i.e. 2 subjects, not the maximum.
