UPSC Prelims 2017 GS Paper I · Q12 of 100 History medium

With reference to Manipuri Sankirtana, consider the following statements : 1. It is a song and dance performance. 2. Cymbals are the only musical instruments used in the performance. 3. It is performed to narrate the life and deeds of Lord Krishna. Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

  1. (a) 1, 2 and 3
  2. (b) 1 and 3 only ✓ UPSC's answer
  3. (c) 2 and 3 only
  4. (d) 1 only

Why the answer is (b)

• Manipuri Sankirtana, inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2013, is a ritual singing, drumming and dancing performance of the Vaishnava community of Manipur (statement 1).

• It narrates the life and deeds of Krishna through song and dance in temple courtyards and homes (statement 3).

• Statement 2 is wrong: besides cymbals (kartal), the pung (barrel drum) is central — the Pung Cholom drum-dance is its hallmark.

• Hence 1 and 3 only, option (b).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) 1, 2 and 3
Statement 2 is wrong: the pung drum is also used.
(c) 2 and 3 only
Statement 2 is wrong; statement 1 is correct.
(d) 1 only
Statement 3 on Krishna narration is also correct.
