Which of the following are the objectives of 'National Nutrition Mission' ? 1. To create awareness relating to malnutrition among pregnant women and lactating mothers. 2. To reduce the incidence of anaemia among young children, adolescent girls and women. 3. To promote the consumption of millets, coarse cereals and unpolished rice. 4. To promote the consumption of poultry eggs. Select the correct answer using the code given below :

  1. (a) 1 and 2 only ✓ UPSC's answer
  2. (b) 1, 2 and 3 only
  3. (c) 1, 2 and 4 only
  4. (d) 3 and 4 only

Why the answer is (a)

• The National Nutrition Mission (POSHAN Abhiyaan, approved 2017) targets stunting, undernutrition, low birth weight and anaemia among children, adolescent girls, pregnant women and lactating mothers through convergence, ICT-based monitoring and behaviour change.

• Creating awareness among pregnant and lactating women (1) and reducing anaemia (2) are stated objectives.

• Promoting millets (3) and eggs (4) are not objectives of the Mission, though States may include them in supplementary nutrition.

• Hence 1 and 2 only, option (a).

Why the other options are wrong

(b) 1, 2 and 3 only
Promoting millets is not a stated Mission objective.
(c) 1, 2 and 4 only
Promoting eggs is not a stated Mission objective.
(d) 3 and 4 only
Awareness and anaemia reduction are the objectives, not food promotion.
