UPSC Prelims 2017 GS Paper I · Q28 of 100 Current Events hard

Consider the following statements : 1. The Nuclear Security Summits are periodically held under the aegis of the United Nations. 2. The International Panel on Fissile Materials is an organ of International Atomic Energy Agency. Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?

  1. (a) 1 only
  2. (b) 2 only
  3. (c) Both 1 and 2
  4. (d) Neither 1 nor 2 ✓ UPSC's answer

Why the answer is (d)

• Statement 1 is wrong: the Nuclear Security Summits (2010 Washington, 2012 Seoul, 2014 The Hague, 2016 Washington) were an initiative of US President Obama, held outside the UN framework.

• Statement 2 is wrong: the International Panel on Fissile Materials is an independent group of experts from 16 countries, based at Princeton University, not an IAEA organ.

• Hence neither 1 nor 2, option (d).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) 1 only
Statement 1 is wrong: the summits were US-led, not UN.
(b) 2 only
Statement 2 is wrong: IPFM is independent, not IAEA.
(c) Both 1 and 2
Both statements are wrong.
