What is/are the advantage/advantages of implementing the 'National Agriculture Market' scheme ? 1. It is a pan-India electronic trading portal for agricultural commodities. 2. It provides the farmers access to nationwide market, with prices commensurate with the quality of their produce. Select the correct answer using the code given below :

  1. (a) 1 only
  2. (b) 2 only
  3. (c) Both 1 and 2 ✓ UPSC's answer
  4. (d) Neither 1 nor 2

Why the answer is (c)

• e-NAM (2016) is a pan-India electronic trading portal that networks existing APMC mandis into a unified national market for agricultural commodities (statement 1).

• Through online bidding, quality assaying and transparent price discovery, farmers get access to buyers across the country and prices that reflect the quality of their produce (statement 2).

• Over 1,300 mandis are now linked.

• Hence both 1 and 2, option (c).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) 1 only
Statement 2 is also correct: nationwide market access with quality-based pricing.
(b) 2 only
Statement 1 is also correct: it is a pan-India portal.
(d) Neither 1 nor 2
Both statements are correct.
