UPSC Prelims 2017 GS Paper I · Q54 of 100 Geography easy

Mediterranean Sea is a border of which of the following countries ? 1. Jordan 2. Iraq 3. Lebanon 4. Syria Select the correct answer using the code given below :

  1. (a) 1, 2 and 3 only
  2. (b) 2 and 3 only
  3. (c) 3 and 4 only ✓ UPSC's answer
  4. (d) 1, 3 and 4 only

Why the answer is (c)

• Lebanon (3) and Syria (4) both have Mediterranean coastlines — Beirut and Latakia are their ports.

• Jordan (1) is almost landlocked, with only a short Red Sea coast at Aqaba; Iraq (2) has a short Persian Gulf coast at Basra/Umm Qasr.

• Hence 3 and 4 only, option (c).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) 1, 2 and 3 only
Jordan and Iraq do not border the Mediterranean.
(b) 2 and 3 only
Iraq does not border the Mediterranean; Syria does.
(d) 1, 3 and 4 only
Jordan does not border the Mediterranean.
