UPSC Prelims 2020 GS Paper I · Q73 of 99 Environment & Ecology medium

Which of the following Protected Areas are located in Cauvery basin ? 1. Nagarhole National Park 2. Papikonda National Park 3. Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve 4. Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary Select the correct answer using the code given below :

  1. (a) 1 and 2 only
  2. (b) 3 and 4 only
  3. (c) 1, 3 and 4 only ✓ UPSC's answer
  4. (d) 1, 2, 3 and 4

Why the answer is (c)

• The Cauvery rises in Kodagu (Karnataka) and its basin spans Karnataka, Kerala (Wayanad) and Tamil Nadu.

• Nagarhole NP (1) lies on the Kabini, a Cauvery tributary; Wayanad WLS (4) drains via the Kabini; Sathyamangalam TR (3) lies on the Bhavani and Moyar, Cauvery tributaries.

• Papikonda NP (2) is in Andhra Pradesh on the Godavari gorge, far outside the Cauvery basin.

• Hence 1, 3 and 4 only, option (c).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) 1 and 2 only
Papikonda is in the Godavari basin, not the Cauvery.
(b) 3 and 4 only
Nagarhole is also in the Cauvery (Kabini) basin.
(d) 1, 2, 3 and 4
Papikonda is outside the Cauvery basin.
