Consider the following pairs : Wetland/Lake — Location 1. Hokera Wetland — Punjab 2. Renuka Wetland — Himachal Pradesh 3. Rudrasagar Lake — Tripura 4. Sasthamkotta Lake — Tamil Nadu How many pairs given above are correctly matched ?
- (a) Only one pair
- (b) Only two pairs ✓ UPSC's answer
- (c) Only three pairs
- (d) All four pairs
Why the answer is (b)
• Pair 2 is correct: Renuka Wetland, a Ramsar site since 2005, is in Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh.
• Pair 3 is correct: Rudrasagar Lake, with the Neermahal palace, is in Tripura and has been a Ramsar site since 2005.
• Pair 1 is wrong: Hokera (Hokersar) Wetland is near Srinagar in Jammu & Kashmir, not Punjab.
• Pair 4 is wrong: Sasthamkotta Lake, the largest freshwater lake of Kerala, is in Kollam district, not Tamil Nadu.
• Hence two pairs, option (b).
Why the other options are wrong
- (a) Only one pair
- Both Renuka and Rudrasagar pairs are correct, so the count is two.
- (c) Only three pairs
- Hokera is in J&K and Sasthamkotta in Kerala; only two pairs are right.
- (d) All four pairs
- Pairs 1 and 4 are wrong.
