UPSC Prelims 2022 GS Paper I · Q53 of 98 History medium

Consider the following freedom fighters : 1. Barindra Kumar Ghosh 2. Jogesh Chandra Chatterjee 3. Rash Behari Bose Who of the above was/were actively associated with the Ghadar Party ?

  1. (a) 1 and 2
  2. (b) 2 only
  3. (c) 1 and 3
  4. (d) 3 only ✓ UPSC's answer

Why the answer is (d)

• The Ghadar Party (1913) was founded by Punjabi immigrants in North America and planned an armed uprising in India in 1915.

• Rash Behari Bose, already wanted for the 1912 bomb attack on Viceroy Hardinge, coordinated the planned Ghadar mutiny in Punjab in February 1915 before escaping to Japan — item 3 is correct.

• Barindra Kumar Ghosh was a leader of the Anushilan Samiti and the Alipore bomb conspiracy in Bengal, and Jogesh Chandra Chatterjee was a founder of the Hindustan Republican Association (1924); neither was part of the Ghadar Party.

• Hence 3 only, option (d).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) 1 and 2
Neither Ghosh nor Chatterjee was in the Ghadar Party.
(b) 2 only
Chatterjee founded the HRA, not a Ghadar member.
(c) 1 and 3
Barindra Ghosh belonged to Bengal's Anushilan Samiti, not Ghadar.
