Consider the following statements : 1. Bidibidi is a large refugee settlement in north-western Kenya. 2. Some people who fled from South Sudan civil war live in Bidibidi. 3. Some people who fled from civil war in Somalia live in Dadaab refugee complex in Kenya. Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?
- (a) 1 and 2
- (b) 2 only
- (c) 2 and 3 ✓ UPSC's answer
- (d) 3 only
Why the answer is (c)
• Statement 1 is wrong: Bidibidi is in north-western Uganda (Yumbe district), not Kenya; opened in 2016, it became one of the world's largest refugee settlements.
• Statement 2 is correct: Bidibidi shelters more than 200,000 people who fled the civil war in South Sudan.
• Statement 3 is correct: the Dadaab complex in eastern Kenya, established in 1991, hosts mainly Somali refugees from that country's civil war.
• Uganda's open-door refugee policy, granting land and work rights, is often cited as a model.
• Hence 2 and 3, option (c).
Why the other options are wrong
- (a) 1 and 2
- Statement 1 is wrong: Bidibidi is in Uganda, not Kenya.
- (b) 2 only
- Statement 3 on Dadaab is also correct.
- (d) 3 only
- Statement 2 on South Sudanese refugees at Bidibidi is also correct.
