UPSC Prelims 2023 GS Paper I · Q100 of 98 Current Events medium

Consider the following statements about G-20 : 1. The G-20 group was originally established as a platform for the Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors to discuss the international economic and financial issues. 2. Digital public infrastructure is one of India's G-20 priorities. Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

  1. (a) 1 only
  2. (b) 2 only
  3. (c) Both 1 and 2 ✓ UPSC's answer
  4. (d) Neither 1 nor 2

Why the answer is (c)

• Statement 1 is correct: the G20 was founded in 1999, after the Asian financial crisis, as a forum of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors of the major economies; it was raised to leaders' level only in 2008 after the global financial crisis.

• Statement 2 is correct: during its 2023 presidency India made digital public infrastructure — Aadhaar, UPI, DigiLocker and the 'India Stack' model — a key priority, alongside green development, inclusive growth and reform of multilateral institutions.

• The New Delhi Declaration endorsed a framework for DPI and a Global DPI Repository.

• Hence both 1 and 2, option (c).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) 1 only
Statement 2 is also correct: DPI was an Indian G20 priority.
(b) 2 only
Statement 1 is also correct: the G20 began as a finance ministers' forum.
(d) Neither 1 nor 2
Both statements are correct.
