UPSC Prelims 2023 GS Paper I · Q2 of 98 Geography medium

Consider the following pairs : Port : Well known as 1. Kamarajar Port : First major port in India registered as a company 2. Mundra Port : Largest privately owned port in India 3. Visakhapatnam Port : Largest container port in India How many of the above pairs are correctly matched?

  1. (a) Only one pair
  2. (b) Only two pairs ✓ UPSC's answer
  3. (c) All three pairs
  4. (d) None of the pairs

Why the answer is (b)

• Pair 1 is correct: Kamarajar Port at Ennore, Tamil Nadu, was the first major port in India to be incorporated as a company (1999) rather than run by a port trust.

• Pair 2 is correct: Mundra Port in Gujarat, operated by Adani Ports, is India's largest privately owned port and now its largest port by cargo.

• Pair 3 is wrong: India's largest container port is Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva) near Mumbai among major ports, with Mundra ahead overall; Visakhapatnam is a leading bulk-cargo port, not the largest container port.

• Hence two pairs, option (b).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) Only one pair
Both the Kamarajar and Mundra pairs are correct.
(c) All three pairs
Visakhapatnam is not India's largest container port.
(d) None of the pairs
Pairs 1 and 2 are correctly matched.
