UPSC Prelims 2023 GS Paper I · Q30 of 98 Economy hard

Consider the following infrastructure sectors : 1. Affordable housing 2. Mass rapid transport 3. Health care 4. Renewable energy On how many of the above does UNOPS Sustainable Investments in Infrastructure and Innovation (S3i) initiative focus for its investments?

  1. (a) Only one
  2. (b) Only two
  3. (c) Only three ✓ UPSC's answer
  4. (d) All four

Why the answer is (c)

• The UN Office for Project Services runs the Sustainable Investments in Infrastructure and Innovation (S3i) initiative to attract private capital into infrastructure that advances the SDGs in developing countries.

• S3i concentrates on three sectors: affordable housing, renewable energy and health infrastructure — items 1, 4 and 3.

• Mass rapid transport is not one of its focus sectors (item 2).

• The initiative's India-linked affordable-housing projects drew scrutiny in 2022, leading to reforms at UNOPS.

• Hence three of the four, option (c).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) Only one
S3i covers three sectors, not one.
(b) Only two
Housing, health and renewable energy are all S3i sectors, making three.
(d) All four
Mass rapid transport is not an S3i focus sector.
