If NO is coded as 210, NOT is coded as 4200 and NOTE is coded as 21000, then how is NOTES coded ?
- (a) 399000 ✓ UPSC's answer
- (b) 420000
- (c) 440000
- (d) 630000
Why the answer is (a)
• Use A=1, B=2, ..., Z=26.
• NO: N=14 and O=15, so 14×15=210.
• NOT: N=14, O=15, T=20, so 14×15×20=4200.
• NOTE: N=14, O=15, T=20, E=5, so 14×15×20×5=21000.
• NOTES: N=14, O=15, T=20, E=5, S=19, so 14×15×20×5×19=399000, which is option (a).
Why the other options are wrong
- (b) 420000
- 420000 would require multiplying 21000 by 20, but S is 19.
- (c) 440000
- 440000 is not equal to 14×15×20×5×19.
- (d) 630000
- 630000 would require multiplying 21000 by 30, but S is 19.
