UPSC Prelims 2025 GS Paper I · Q33 of 99 Economy hard

With reference to the Government of India, consider the following information : Organization | Some of its functions | It works under I. Directorate of Enforcement | Enforcement of the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act, 2018 | Internal Security Division-I, Ministry of Home Affairs II. Directorate of Revenue Intelligence | Enforces the Provisions of the Customs Act, 1962 | Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance III. Directorate General of Systems and Data Management | Carrying out big data analytics to assist tax officers for better policy and nabbing tax evaders | Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance In how many of the above rows is the information correctly matched?

  1. (a) Only one ✓ UPSC's answer
  2. (b) Only two
  3. (c) All the three
  4. (d) None

Why the answer is (a)

• Row I is wrong: the Directorate of Enforcement does enforce the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act, 2018, but it works under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance — not the Internal Security Division of the Home Ministry.

• Row II is correct: the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence is the anti-smuggling agency enforcing the Customs Act, 1962, and functions under the CBIC in the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance.

• Row III is wrong on function: the Directorate General of Systems and Data Management builds and runs the tax departments' IT infrastructure; big-data analytics to catch evaders is the job of the Directorate General of Analytics and Risk Management (DGARM) under CBIC.

• A row counts only if all three cells are right, so only row II is correctly matched.

• Hence option (a).

Why the other options are wrong

(b) Only two
Rows I (wrong ministry) and III (wrong function) both fail, leaving only one correct row.
(c) All the three
Only row II is fully correct.
(d) None
Row II on the DRI is correctly matched, so the count is not zero.
