Which of the statements given above are correct?
- (a) I and II only
- (b) II and III only
- (c) I and III only
- (d) I, II and III ✓ UPSC's answer
Why the answer is (d)
• India produces over 70% of the world's turmeric (about 11–12 lakh tonnes a year) and is also the largest exporter, shipping to over 150 countries — statement I is correct.
• More than 30 varieties are cultivated, including GI-tagged ones such as Erode, Sangli, Waigaon and Lakadong turmeric — statement II is correct.
• Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, together with Andhra Pradesh and Meghalaya, are the leading producers — statement III is correct.
• The National Turmeric Board, headquartered at Nizamabad, Telangana, was set up in 2023–25 to promote the crop and its exports.
• Hence I, II and III, option (d).
Why the other options are wrong
- (a) I and II only
- Statement III on the major producing States is also correct.
