UPSC Prelims 2025 GS Paper I · Q53 of 99 Current Events medium

Who amongst the following are members of the Jury to select the recipient of 'Gandhi Peace Prize'? I. The President of India II. The Prime Minister of India III. The Chief Justice of India IV. The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Select the correct answer using the code given below.

  1. (a) II and IV only
  2. (b) I, II and III
  3. (c) II, III and IV ✓ UPSC's answer
  4. (d) I and III only

Why the answer is (c)

• The Gandhi Peace Prize, instituted by the Government of India in 1995 on Gandhi's 125th birth anniversary, honours contributions to social, economic and political transformation through non-violence.

• Its jury is chaired by the Prime Minister and includes the Chief Justice of India, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha (or leader of the largest opposition party) and two other eminent persons.

• The President of India is not a member of the jury; the President's role is to present the award at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

• Recent recipients include the Gita Press (2021) and the Ramakrishna Mission (2019).

• Hence II, III and IV, option (c).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) II and IV only
The Chief Justice of India is also a jury member.
(b) I, II and III
The President is not on the jury; the Leader of Opposition is.
(d) I and III only
The President is not a member; the PM and Leader of Opposition are.
