Tungurahua Volcano, which was declared a Global Geopark by UNESCO in 2025, is situated in which one among the following countries ?

  1. (a) Ecuador ✓ UPSC's answer
  2. (b) Peru
  3. (c) Bolivia
  4. (d) Colombia

Why the answer is (a)

• Tungurahua ('Throat of Fire') is an active stratovolcano of about 5,023 m in the Andes of central Ecuador, near the town of Baños in Tungurahua province.

• In 2025 UNESCO added the Tungurahua Volcano area to its Global Geoparks Network, recognising its geological heritage and community-based geotourism.

• UNESCO Global Geoparks are single, unified areas of international geological significance managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development.

• Peru, Bolivia and Colombia are also Andean countries, but Tungurahua lies in Ecuador, which already had the Imbabura Geopark.

• Hence option (a).

Why the other options are wrong

(b) Peru
Tungurahua is not in Peru.
(c) Bolivia
Tungurahua is not in Bolivia.
(d) Colombia
