UPSC Prelims 2017 GS Paper I · Q6 of 100 Environment & Ecology medium

Consider the following statements in respect of Trade Related Analysis of Fauna and Flora in Commerce (TRAFFIC) : 1. TRAFFIC is a bureau under United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). 2. The mission of TRAFFIC is to ensure that trade in wild plants and animals is not a threat to the conservation of nature. Which of the above statements is/are correct ?

  1. (a) 1 only
  2. (b) 2 only ✓ UPSC's answer
  3. (c) Both 1 and 2
  4. (d) Neither 1 nor 2

Why the answer is (b)

• TRAFFIC, founded in 1976, is a non-governmental wildlife-trade monitoring network established as a joint programme of WWF and IUCN, headquartered in Cambridge, UK — it is not a UNEP bureau, so statement 1 is wrong.

• Statement 2 is correct: its mission is to ensure that trade in wild plants and animals is not a threat to the conservation of nature; it works closely with CITES.

• Hence 2 only, option (b).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) 1 only
Statement 1 is wrong: TRAFFIC is a WWF–IUCN programme, not UNEP.
(c) Both 1 and 2
Statement 1 is wrong.
(d) Neither 1 nor 2
Statement 2 is correct.
