UPSC Prelims 2022 GS Paper I · Q76 of 98 Current Events medium

With reference to the "United Nations Credentials Committee", consider the following statements : 1. It is a committee set up by the UN Security Council and works under its supervision. 2. It traditionally meets in March, June and September every year. 3. It assesses the credentials of all UN members before submitting a report to the General Assembly for approval. Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?

  1. (a) 3 only ✓ UPSC's answer
  2. (b) 1 and 3
  3. (c) 2 and 3
  4. (d) 1 and 2

Why the answer is (a)

• The Credentials Committee is a nine-member body appointed by the UN General Assembly at the start of each session to examine the credentials of delegates and report to the Assembly — statement 3 is correct.

• Statement 1 is wrong: it is a committee of the General Assembly, not the Security Council.

• Statement 2 is wrong: it meets as needed during the session, typically late in the year, not on a fixed March–June–September schedule.

• It came into the news over rival claims to Afghanistan's and Myanmar's seats, which it deferred.

• Hence 3 only, option (a).

Why the other options are wrong

(b) 1 and 3
Statement 1 is wrong: the committee belongs to the General Assembly.
(c) 2 and 3
Statement 2 is wrong: there is no fixed March-June-September schedule.
(d) 1 and 2
Statements 1 and 2 are both wrong.
