Consider the following pairs : Site of Ashoka's major rock edicts : Location in the State of 1. Dhauli — Odisha 2. Erragudi — Andhra Pradesh 3. Jaugada — Madhya Pradesh 4. Kalsi — Karnataka How many pairs given above are correctly matched ?

  1. (a) Only one pair
  2. (b) Only two pairs ✓ UPSC's answer
  3. (c) Only three pairs
  4. (d) All four pairs

Why the answer is (b)

• Pair 1 is correct: Dhauli near Bhubaneswar, Odisha, has a major rock edict with the famous elephant carving, near the Kalinga battlefield.

• Pair 2 is correct: Erragudi (Yerragudi) in Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh, has both major and minor rock edicts.

• Pair 3 is wrong: Jaugada is in Ganjam district of Odisha, not Madhya Pradesh.

• Pair 4 is wrong: Kalsi is in Dehradun district of Uttarakhand, not Karnataka.

• Hence two pairs, option (b).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) Only one pair
Both Dhauli and Erragudi pairs are correct.
(c) Only three pairs
Jaugada is in Odisha and Kalsi in Uttarakhand, so only two pairs are right.
(d) All four pairs
Pairs 3 and 4 are wrong.
