UPSC Prelims 2022 GS Paper I · Q92 of 98 History medium

Consider the following pairs : King : Dynasty 1. Nannuka — Chandela 2. Jayashakti — Paramara 3. Nagabhata II — Gurjara-Pratihara 4. Bhoja — Rashtrakuta How many pairs given above are correctly matched ?

  1. (a) Only one pair
  2. (b) Only two pairs ✓ UPSC's answer
  3. (c) Only three pairs
  4. (d) All four pairs

Why the answer is (b)

• Pair 1 is correct: Nannuka (c. 831) founded the Chandela dynasty of Jejakabhukti (Bundelkhand).

• Pair 3 is correct: Nagabhata II (c. 805–833) was a Gurjara-Pratihara king who captured Kanauj.

• Pair 2 is wrong: Jayashakti (Jeja) was a Chandela ruler, grandson of Nannuka, after whom Jejakabhukti is named — not a Paramara.

• Pair 4 is wrong: Bhoja is the name of a Paramara king of Dhar (Bhoja, c. 1010–1055) and of a Pratihara king (Mihira Bhoja, c. 836–885), but not of any Rashtrakuta ruler.

• Hence two pairs, option (b).

Why the other options are wrong

(a) Only one pair
Both the Nannuka and Nagabhata II pairs are correct.
(c) Only three pairs
Jayashakti was a Chandela and Bhoja was not a Rashtrakuta; only two pairs are right.
(d) All four pairs
Pairs 2 and 4 are wrong.
