Vijayanagara architecture (14th–16th century CE) represents an eclectic synthesis, preserving classical Dravidian traditions while dynamically absorbing contemporary Indo-Islamic practices from the neighbouring Deccan Sultanates.
Temple Architecture and Pillared Mandapas In the religious sphere, the empire continued the Chola and Pandya idioms, monumentalising them into expansive complexes. The Virupaksha Temple illustrates the continuity of the Dravidian vimana and the elaboration of towering Raya Gopurams. Building upon Chola and Hoysala concepts of assembly halls, the empire innovated highly ornate Kalyana Mandapas (marriage halls) and hundred-pillared halls. The Vitthala Temple at Hampi epitomises this peak through its monolithic stone chariot, intricate open pavilions, and finely chiselled musical pillars.
Secular Architecture and Indo-Islamic Fusion Contemporary practices found vivid expression in the Royal Enclosure, where architects adopted Sultanate engineering techniques. Structures such as the Lotus Mahal, the Queen’s Bath, and the Elephant Stables utilise multi-foliated arches, barrel vaults, squinches, recessed geometric domes, and fine stucco plasterwork. This reflected a cosmopolitan courtly culture that borrowed functional and aesthetic features from contemporary regional sultanates without diluting indigenous sacred forms.
Sculptural Synthesis Sculptural art maintained the Pallava-Chola legacy of narrative relief carving from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. However, it integrated contemporary realism, featuring Portuguese horse traders, royal processions, and vigorous equestrian motifs on rearing yali pillars, reflecting the empire's militarised society and maritime trade networks.
Thus, Vijayanagara architecture bridged regional pasts with contemporary innovations, creating a syncretic imperial style immortalised in the UNESCO World Heritage status of the Group of Monuments at Hampi.
What "Elucidate" is asking you to do
Make a stated proposition plain and then prove it with instances. Elucidate stems almost always carry a claim or a named concept, and very often the words “with examples” or “with suitable diagrams” — the illustration is part of the directive, not decoration.
Structure that answers it
Plain-language statement of what the proposition means → the part that is obscure, resolved → first illustration → second illustration → why the proposition holds
Where marks are lost
Adding terminology; elucidate rewards removing it. The commoner loss is a clean explanation with no example, when the stem asked for examples.
